It's a Wrap!

Calgary's flood took the spotlight in our lives recently, but I thought I'd get started on the many blog posts that I have owed to readers for a long time. As they say, some semblance of "normality" is good after something big happens. Calgary's infrastructure will need working on for some time to come, but at least the damage has stopped for the time being (as in, the waters making it worse have receded).

The week before the flood was the wrap up of the Invisible show. It ended safely without any further injuries, thank the skies - and all the more so, as in one of the pieces a wobbly chair was brought out that shouldn't have been used and it ended up going to me, so I really had to compromise the movement and be careful during the dance!

I went to physio during the week after and apparently my knee is still not at the point of strength that I thought it was getting to. There is still a long (possibly lifelong) road of strengthening and conditioning for my leg, but it may be a good opportunity to push myself to be the strong and healthy person I want to be.

This was one of the hallways in backstage Theatre Junction GRAND. I didn't know this hall was signed by performers until I saw a fellow dancing friend's picture of their team signing the hall after the show was over. Thus unfortunately for the GRAND (yes, for the GRAND ^^ ), my name never made it onto this hall.

Our venti-sized Starbucks to get us through the night. Mine is the Iced Caramel Macchiato on the right.

An unrelated Venti Caramel Frappuccino photo I took on a different day, for international viewers to get an idea of Starbucks size in Canada. I don't carry a ruler around with me so had to make do with the hand and utensils. I fell in love with the caramel frappuccino while living in Japan. Japan's version of the Java Chip Frappuccino, my previous favorite, tastes different than how it is made in Canada. I didn't like the Japanese version as much, so I started trying other drinks and hit upon the caramel frappuccino. The price of a venti is expensive in both Canada and Japan, but in Japan your Venti size is about equal to Canada's Grande size. Despite the smaller venti, people's eyes still followed me everywhere every time I ordered such a large venti. (≧▽≦)

One of my teams backstage in the waiting room prepping costume and makeup.

Some of the other dancers backstage.

The eye makeup I came up with for one of the pieces. The photo is actually due to the not-so-great lighting quality of the iPhone 4S camera.

Had fun with the makeup, as usual. No false eyelashes though for lack of time between pieces!

A rehearsal shot that fellow dancer Angie took of one of our pieces.I freestyled this move and was honored to have our choreographer Nicole use it in the piece.

Danced two piece with this team. This black one represents breakthrough in the inner mind, the ego's firm refusal of abuse and degradation.

After breakthrough comes a Brand New Me. Photo missing one dancer.

Foolin' around. (#^.^#)

Group photo of those involved in Invisible. It was hard to get everyone in one place with the scheduling so the photo is still missing some people.

Lastly, a picture with Invisible guest Dianna David from Vancouver.

...And it's a wrap! Looking forward to more great things from our artists in the future.

Calgary Flood 2013

Many who know Calgary have heard news of its recent flooding by now. For a city that is relatively dry and serene, the sudden emergency that hit on Thursday, June 20th took many by surprise.

I am safe, and incredibly grateful to have avoided evacuation and flooding by about one block of neighborhood space. I stayed home with my beloved chinchilla and family, minimized water usage and lived without electricity and gas, and those with a situation similar to mine (minus the cute chinchilla) or who were unaffected entirely are very lucky.

So far I've been thankful to avoid having my life torn apart by the 2011 Japan Tohoku Earthquake, and a flood in the city I was living in that same summer. For a family that has been struggling with financially tough times, the fear of losing everything we've worked for, or tried to maintain, or pieced back together, hovers in the corner. Still, I do not like to think about falling off the tightrope and instead try to focus on what I can do. And on the other side of the same coin is the perpetual thankfulness for the many blessings I do have.

While I come across many friendly and courteous people in Calgary, I am also often disappointed by those that spend their day being rude, snide, inconsiderate, impatient, or downright mean. However, this time it was a relief to see Calgary come through as a team. The city government called a state of emergency and set a plan of action rolling before the general public even considered the possibility of flooding. There was no overflowing burden on emergency evacuation shelters, because friends, family, and even strangers offered up their places to stay. For someone who was on standby for mandatory evacuation, it was incredibly heartwarming and reassuring on a personal level to have friends who extended their hands to me.

It was also great to see (later when I had electricity) the Facebook pages that were set up with people offering tips, help, and updates, community pages set up for location specific information, stores offering free ice or cleanup services, and redistributed positive Twitter tweets from our Mayor and local police force. I saw many individuals offering help, or even just genuine words of encouragement, and thought, "these are the people I'm glad to know," and, "these are the people I want to meet."

People will be people, but I hope this spirit of Calgary will continue to stay with us in our every day connections with each other, and that we can act as an example for the world with our open minds and kindness.

Calgary 2013

Heather

About Chubbified

Vienne is a singer, dancer, and part time superhero to small beings (chinchillas, dogs, elephants, and gentle youkai of all sizes included). Grounded in R&B, Pop, and Classical, she uses these genres to explore her love of all music. She likes to sing under the moonlight and freestyle dance when nobody's watching, and sometimes in front of people if there is a strong, soulful beat. Her secret fantasy daydream is to appear in an epic film.

Vienne dabbles in visual art (currently focused on ink drawing) and recreational photography when she has time, after watching Japanese animation series. She plans to start on her pottery and jewelry endeavors a bit later in life (after she's done eating). To make ends meet, Vienne is currently selling her soul (and business skills) to evil companies in high-rise downtown offices (but makes sure to choose one that is environmentally responsible and values its people).

Vienne loves fashion and amuses herself by wearing things that shouldn't but sometimes do turn the heads of more "conservative" Calgarian streetgoers. She is half Asian Canadian and half Queen (only when Elizabeth is off duty), which might explain why she never seems to get to bed before 12 but usually has to work at 7.

Most recently, Vienne has discovered circus aerials and keeps herself busy trying not to get silk and rope burn. She dreams of standing on the big stage and connecting with hearts around the world through song, dance, and other performing arts. She hopes that others will hear her voice and choose to live fully and feel emotion, as she did in her darkest hour. She wants to encourage those who were told to give up on their dreams, those who told her to stop believing in dreams, and those who are afraid of having a dream. She is inspired when friends, family and new faces tell her they make a change in their lives or see the greatness in themselves and others because they are encouraged by how she lives.

Chubbified

HAIR @ Invisible Show

One of the projects I am participating in this year is the Invisible Show, a show that deals with societal issues from the perspective of women and looks at vulnerabilities they face. Organized by Connie Jakab who created the Something to Say show which I was a part of last year, Invisible brings together local dancers, choreographers, and spoken word artists, as well as featured guests such as Dianna David from Vancouver, to explore some issues that women struggle with today.

My artistic director Nicole, founder of J'ouvert Playhouse, is also doing spoken word in addition to choreographing for the show. Below is a funky piece she composed, to be spoken by one of our dancers, which I love and have received permission to share with you here.

Spoken word gets its name from the fact that the pieces are meant to be "spoken" and the pieces are typically much stronger performed aloud, but I think the content and words in this piece work well enough that you can appreciate it even in written format.

Over the past couple weeks I managed to watch every spoken word piece in our show, and they are all incredible. The beloved piece below is one of the lighter pieces, but all of the spoken word we have in the show is strong, and very emotional. If you are in Calgary, dare to see the show on Friday, June 14th and Saturday, June 15th at Theatre Junction GRAND.

HAIR

Ladies let's talk hair shall we
Yes let's talk about our hair
I'm talking to all the ladies
You know how we do
Mmm hmm
It's our outer crown and glory
We like it long
We Like it short
We like to put some more on
Or take that clip out
Give it a little twirl
Bounce those little curls
Scissor it up
Razor it down
Strip it
Dye it
When the hair stylist is God him/herself
Oh holy stylist
Work those hands
Sparkle those fingers
And they do create magic or
Tragic
Tears may flow
But honey you got to get out of that chair and go!
Strut your stuff
Flip that hair
Shake it around
That my lady is your crown
Rooted strands from thy perfect head
Grow strong
Just ask Rupenzel
A damn prince and a nasty selfish woman climbed and down those strands of hair
Don't you wonder what she used on her hair?
We wash and condition it with any and everything under the sun that we hope will achieve the perfect hair commercial look
You know what I'm talking about
The ones with the chick with the luminous, free flowing, loooooong hair
Oh and don't forget strong
They even show one girl with her hair tied in a knot and pull!!!
To testify how strong the hair is when you use their magical product
Not my hair you won't
Pulling hair that hurts!
Ah yes the perfect wind blown, shiny hair
That's called good lighting and a big huge fan
By who's standards is the perfect head of hair?
When did a good head of hair become an extension of a woman's character and identity?
When I see a sister with a banging Afro
Some people think its too natural, it's not clean or beautiful
But I think she's amazing, confident, embraces her natural hair
If a woman has very short hair
She maybe called a lesbian
When did having short hair make someone a lesbian?
If a girl with a Mohawk graces your presence
Why do you automatically want to pretty her up and make her look more like a "lady"?
But when a woman with long flowing hair walks by you go wow...beautiful
What had me in tears is seeing a young black child Participating in an experiment was asked to pick a doll, a white doll and a black doll and she chose the white doll
Why
Because she though it was prettier and she had good hair
What has happened to our society when a young girl is already conditioned to what "good hair" should be and how she will be accepted in society
We have become conditioned by our own stereotypes, commercial representation, social expectations and male preferences
Thousands of strands of hair
Attached to the head
We curl it
Straighten it
Cut it
Grow it
Weave it
Braid it
Twist it
Cover it
Put a wig on it
Crimp it
Wave it
Wrap it
Bun it
Wash, condition, deep condition it, sit under a dryer, blow dry it, style it
For who?
You?
Me?
Mary Jane across the hall?
My boss?
My sweetheart who says baby I like it when you wear your hair that way.....
Society too brainwashed from watching too many makeover shows
Hair our crown and glory
Where so much emotion is attached to a few thousand strands
Damn
And you wonder why we take so long to get ready.
